For many years the chronic Pain Association has been working to change chronic pain awareness and education and management at several levels including how the medical doctors are educated. I'm pleased to say this role has been taken up by various fractions of the medical profession and there is a strong organization of doctors who are developing standards of both pain management and professional pain education standards. This positive change allows us to concentrate our efforts on people living with pain.
We want to begin increasing our communication between the Support Group Leaders and the Chronic Pain Association of Canada (CPAC)
True this has been a long time in coming but recent associations with a number of influential groups has made this initiative possible. The strength of the Chronic Pain Association of Canada (CPAC), comes from the members, which is why we want to increase our focus on providing services to our support groups and their members.
Some of our initiatives include:
Providing support to the Chronic Pain Support Groups
Chronic Pain Self Management initiatives
Education for support group members
Leadership training for support group leaders
Developing partnerships with other groups who have concerns about pain management
Making connections with community resources

CPAC Changes its Focus
One important mandate of the Chronic Pain Association of Canada, (CPAC), is to develop support groups across Canada for people living with pain. We strongly believe that support groups are very important because they provide a safe and constructive environment where people living with pain can share pain management strategies with each other and provide encouragement and support for the daily struggle of living with pain. Support Groups are developed to allow members to work together and give and receive support.
Benefits of support groups include:-
Taking back control and living easier with chronic pain
Provide education about chronic pain, the disease and about pain management therapies
Have guest speakers share their knowledge about an aspect of pain management or healthy living
Break the isolation that often happens to people living with pain
Provide information about or run the chronic pain self management program sessions
Provide links to services in the community
Find assistance for some of the difficulties that are part of living with pain.
Understand the facts about chronic pain and suggestions about advocating for change in pain education and management.
Learning how to live a meaningful life with chronic pain
Provide a safe place to talk effectively about some of the difficult emotions arising from living with pain such as depression, anger, suicide, dependency, self image, self esteem,
Teach skills to be the leader of pain management team.
